The SPACI Awards Structure

Bronze (Koru) Level Awards (Year 1, Ages 8-9)

Spiritual

  • Originz
  • The requirements for this award will impart spiritual knowledge of God, the Trinity, The Bible, the Church & some foundational truths about the Christian Faith. It is our prayer & desire to impart Biblical knowledge & faith to the kids that will lay a foundation for other truths, about life & the Christian world-view.

The foundation of all Christian faith, demands the answers to five world-view questions:
    1. Where do we come from?    God created us.
    2. Who makes the rules?    God does.
    3. How do we know what is truth?    God's word is the basis of all truth.
    4. What are we doing here?    To glorify God & to enjoy him forever.
    5. Where are we going?    To spend eternity with God.

The Word of God reveals the whole truth about God to His creation. Therefore, it is to the Bible that we will turn, to source the information for the award.

Physical

  • RagzSplash

  • This is one of the physical components for the Bronze Spaci Medal. There are choices of two elements to this award: Games & Aquatics.

The games are made up of the Team Section Games Competition games. We suggest that you run these during the end of the second winter term so that the aquatics element can be run soon after during the summer terms.

    Purpose
The aims of this award are:

    • To get the kids physically active
    • Working together as a team
    • To improve their water confidence
    • To challenge them to work towards improving their swimming skills.

Adventure

  • Campizz

  • For boys, the Ultimate Adventure is a camp out with their mates. This first year award will enable them to receive recognition for completing something that they really love doing. This bronze level camping award is based on camps or sleepovers in buildings or cribs/cabins as opposed to canvas. That however does not mean that canvas camps are not permitted - on the contrary.

    Aims
The requirements for the award cover the camping experience only & not the activities that the kids participate in during their camp experiences.

Camping forms unity, friendships & camaraderie between kids & this is the main reason they enjoy the experience so much. Therefore that is why the Campizz Award has an emphasis on the experience & not the activities. The Silver & Gold Campizz Awards will enlarge on these activities & the roughing it aspect of camping under canvas & without conveniences.

  • Mudguardz

  • This award qualifies for the Bronze SPACI Medal

Kiwi Boys & Bikes are like the proverbial hand & glove. It is rare to find one without a bike & even rarer to find a kiwi boy who cannot ride a bike. Therefore it is important for our kids & boys in particular to learn how to care for their bikes, how to maintain them & use them in a manner which they were designed for, that will enable the parents to get value for money when investing in such an item for their kids.

    Note:
The kids will get far more from the sessions if the person/people who speak to them during these modules are either a shop owner (At the shop) or a youthful BMX or Mountain Bike rider who can demonstrate some clever stunts or tell a funny or scary story from their own experience.

    Purpose

    • This award is designed to inform kids on safety issues they should know when riding on the road or track
    • It will teach them what to, & what not to do with their bikes.
    • They will learn how to repair punctures & carry out minor maintenance.
    • The kids will have an opportunity to ride on either a BMX track, mountain bike track, go on a road ride or another supervised bike ride.

  • Bushmanz

  • New Zealanders are renowned for their love of the great outdoors. Since the mid twentieth century we have become even more focused on the great Kiwi Lifestyle. In the last 2 decades however, the number of kiwi kids being active in sports including the outdoor pursuits has eroded to the point that we are on the verge of an obesity epidemic. Iconz Adventure is all about Adventure, therefore this award is an important part of getting kids outdoors in all seasons & having fun while learning new skills.

    Purpose
The Bushmanz award programme aims to help kids SetUp love with the great outdoors.
They will learn & take part in the following activities:

    • Camp fire skills
    • Building a shelter or Bivouac
    • Rope work & knot tying

These skills will give the kids a taste of the real fun that can be had, for kids who venture into the rural areas of our wonderful country.

Community

  • Anzac

  • Anzac Day is perhaps one of the most important & unifying events on the New Zealand calendar. The April 25th commemorations have for over eighty years been a focus for all Kiwis.

You kids are well taught about Anzac day at school, therefore this award will help you know more about Anzac Day & test how much you know about it. This study will help you as children to think about the things that veterans did on behalf of future young people of New Zealand & assist you to get a first hand look at what Anzac day is all about. The desired outcome will be to see you grow in your desire to serve your own communities in a similarly unselfish way.

    Aims
The aims of this award are to help Iconz achieve the following:

    • To raise their awareness of the sacrifice made by servicemen & women in wartime during the 20th century.
    • Encourage their attendance or involvement in the commemorations.
    • Think about & implement ways of serving people in the community in a way that will enable them to in some way identify with the veterans.

  • Domestix

This award is all about domestic safety! Demonstrating & modeling to the kids some basic skills of entertaining guests at a "Tea Party" or simply taking a cup of coffee to mum with her breakfast in bed. For the kids, participating in the module for this award will improve the kids' ceremonial service & social skills.

    Aims
The purpose of this Award is to train the kids to prepare a dessert, how to make coffee, tea & some protocols of serving food & hot drinks to parents. This Award forms a base to build on which will lead to baking & cooking. It also allows kids the chance to prepare rehearse & give a small speech or presentation on such occasions.

Interest

  • Trax

  • For New Zealand to lead the way in the world in the conservation of creation, children need to be taught the values of protecting the natural world that God has gifted us. The so-called "greenies" have led the way from a controversial perspective, however their extreme position has raised the attention of mainstream society, and made us all more aware of the need to care for the environment.

This award will give our kids a knowledge & interest of some of our endangered species & environments. It will help them to be more aware of every day actions that can help or hinder our wild life & their habitats, our rain forests & beaches, wetlands & waterways. The Trax Award will enable the kids to get out there & enjoy the creation that demonstrates God's majesty & power & help them to appreciate it without affecting it negatively.

    Purpose
The Trax Award aims to help our kids appreciate the uniqueness of our natural New Zealand environment. The modules they will look at through this curriculum will focus on nurturing their knowledge and interest in New Zealand native species of flora & fauna, and then foster an attitude of preservation and conservation towards it. They will learn to identify nationally occurring common, or less common but well-known species of birds & plants, then secondly take a closer look at a look at our endangered species in a more localised environment or habitat. Here they will focus on an endangered species relevant to the locality of where they live. I.e. the NZ Dotterel, dune plants at the beach in the Bay of Plenty, the preservation Northland Kiwi Population or Kakapo projects in the South Island. Thirdly they will learn the rules of the Back Country Code, which will foster a culture of respect & care for the NZ natural environment in the wetland, bush, beach, lake, river or mountain.

  • Safe-Azz

  • Kids in the west could be perceived as being wrapped up in cotton wool compared with their third world cousins. There are many restrictions & rules imposed on outdoor activities today that never existed before, which are causing schools & movements such as ours to think twice before venturing outside the walled classroom.

Risk management procedures come down to pointing the finger at the people responsible, or being able to pinpoint blame on person in charge of an event if things go wrong, therefore it is vital that you thoroughly plan your outdoor programme with these risks in mind. We acknowledge that things cannot always go according to plan & that mistakes & injuries will happen even in the most controlled setting. However, if correct procedures & plans of action in set circumstances are documented & followed, then the leaders responsible for the programme have nothing to fear because they are working within the law.

    Aim:
The purpose of this award is to educate boys in the process of risk management, relative to their previous learning in the Trax Award Modules. The group will be taught what to do in the event that normal activities place a boy in a dangerous situation.

The activities & requirements for this patch follow directly on from the Trax award. Therefore, the location or outdoor classroom of this programme should follow the same theme. For example, this module of the programme needs to be at the surf club if the theme of the Trax award was beach conservation, or with mountain safety people if the Trax programme was in a scenic reserve or park with native flora & Fauna.
