The SPACI Awards Structure

Silver (Mere) Level Awards (Year 2, Ages 9-10)

Spiritual

  • Missionz

  • New Zealand society as we know it, is largely founded on Christian principles as a result of the ministry of the early missionaries among others. These pioneers formed relationships with Maori in many parts of the country & were among the first Europeans to learn the Maori language. Missionaries had a large role in the translation of the Treaty of Waitangi & so their influence still has a direct effect on the New Zealand of today. This Award looks into the role missionary families & people played in life within 19th century NZ society & the legacy they have left on all Kiwis in the 21st Century.

The kids will also have the opportunity to look into the lives & achievements of other missionaries around the world from the early Church of Acts & indeed right through up to today's missionaries sent out from our own country.

    Aim:
The aim of this award & its sessions in the weekly Iconz programme is to allow kids the opportunity to discover facts about early the early Christian Church in New Zealand. They will learn about the lives of the early pioneer missionaries, their life styles & living conditions, the influence they had on the people they ministered to & the legacy they have left for us today.

  • Questionz

  • This award seeks to arm the children with some foundational Old & New Testament scripture & spiritual knowledge because "Faith comes from hearing & hearing by the word of God..."

    Aim:
Children awarded this award will have studied in depth the ten points & will have hopefully committed the main points to memory so they can recall them when the need arises.

Physical

  • Sportz

  • The Iconz Adventure ministry is designed to encourage kids to live a balanced lifestyle between the spiritual, physical, social, community service, interest & adventure aspects. This physical award is all about getting the kids outside to play sport, being a member of a team & getting active & competitive.

    Aim:
This award is designed to give recognition to kids who play sport on top of their already busy Iconz programme, and if those who are not involved in a sport are motivated by the award, then they may choose to join up to play a sport that they would have otherwise not committed to.

  • Olympix

  • This Award will bring the skills or abilites of the physically talented & competitive kids to the fore. In this award the kids will participate in a mini Olympics event over either a three or four-week period. This event will give the kids the opportunity to play competitive outdoor games & other activities or events which can be competed for in their teams or individually.

    Aim:
Iconz is about getting kiwi kids out into the great outdoors & off their couches. The purpose of this award is to make the most of outdoor activities during the summer & to get the kids into some indoor & outdoor physical fun.

Adventure

  • Hunta

  • This award allows kids to participate in activities, which all children want to do at some stage. Boys will thrive on the challenge of catching a fish, eel or possum & the girls will find the activities lower of their interest scale...that is until they catch their first one, after that they will enjoy the challenge. Hopefully the kids will enjoy many different expeditions through out their lives & some may require gathering food from the wild. While we don't expect that they will need to provide for their own survival, they will get a thrill from catching their first fish or eel & intimately look forward to the fishing/hunting experience.

    Aim:
This award aims to provide kids with new outdoor experiences, in particular ones that introduce them to hunting skills which could involve gathering or fishing for sea food, fresh water trout fishing or eeling & target shooting. These activities are included because they are not only fun but because they require discipline & careful following of instructions.

  • Campizz 2

  • For boys, the Ultimate Adventure is a camp out with their mates. This award will enable them to receive recognition for completing something that they really love doing. This bronze level camping award is based on camps or sleepovers in buildings or cribs/cabins as opposed to canvas. That however does not mean that canvas camps are not permitted - on the contrary.

    Aim:
The main purpose of the Campizz Award is to introduce boys to the many outdoor activities, which can be participated in while camping before getting into the total canvas "roughing it" camping experience.

Note: The requirements for the award cover the camping experience only & not the activities that the boys participate in during their camp experiences.

  • Bushmanz 2

  • This award builds on the new experiences you gave the kids outdoors with last year's Bushmanz programme. While it would be great to repeat those activities again & feel free if you wish to, the SPACI awards scheme aims to provide kids with new experiences every year rather than increasing the difficulty or intensity through progressive repetition.

    Aim:
The Mere Bushmanz Award programme aims build on the skills learnt last year & to help kids fall in love with the great outdoors. They will repeat & take part in last year's activities if desired: Campfire skills, Building a shelter or Bivouac & Rope work & knot tying. These skills will hopefully have given the kids a taste of the real fun that can be had, if they venture into the rural areas of our wonderful country.

This Silver (Mere) programme adds to the three separate skills learned last year & will include river crossing, camp cooking and Search & Rescue (SAR).

Community

  • Legendz

  • There are two parts to this award: the History of Iconz & Boys' Brigade & its founder & a look into the heroes from stories of the Bible.

Legend has two main meanings today. The first is a popular story handed down from earlier times, which may or may not be true & the second is a person whose fame makes him or her seem exceptional. Part of the strategy, of inspiring kids grow from being Kiwi Kids into Kiwi Icons, is to expose them to people & role models who they will want to be like. The is full of true stories about people who were legends, wonderful role models who were just as human as we are. They were ordinary men & women who God rescued from sin just like us, that were available for service. He used them to make a difference in their world & we want to see these ordinary kids make a difference in their world also.

The most effective way of transforming the lives of these kids is through Christ. The tools He has given us are prayer, (the examples of Jesus & other characters) & the lives of people around the kids. If a child comes from a family who has never stepped into the church, then we as leaders are their Christian role models. When kids start their involvement in Iconz Adventure they will be unaware of the depth on history behind the Iconz & Boys' Brigade movement. And thus their knowledge of the Christian Faith will depend on their family background & the faith beliefs of their parents.

    Aim:
The purpose of this award is to give the kids background knowledge on the Iconz Movement, it's history & people & the foundational truths, principles & beliefs behind the movement. Another aim is to motivate the kids to live a life like the people they study in this series, to do some public speaking & to remember these people by having to recall & tell a story about them.

  • Patriot

  • This award follows directly on from the Anzac award from last years programme.

New Zealanders by in large are less patriotic than our American, Australian & British cousins, as Kiwis we have much to be thankful for & to be proud of. The land we like to call Godzone is one of the most beautiful, friendly, green & so physically diverse in such a small place. We have a Maori culture which is unique to these islands, we commonly excel in sporting achievements at the world's top levels, New Zealanders are sought after world wide because of their work ethic & professional training, not to mention our recent movie making & yacht building & racing successes. New Zealanders have led the world in areas of science, commerce, sports, computer technology tourism & we have a military history to be proud of, to name a few. But at times we fail to allow ourselves to celebrate our Kiwi cultural uniqueness & kiwi international success.

    Aim:
It is our desire for young kiwi kids to grow to be proud to be a New Zealander. We want them to succeed in their spiritual lives, academic studies, careers, sporting, art & cultural achievements nationally & internationally. To achieve the aim of growing Kiwi Patriots we will study & celebrate some aspects of our history our successes & our culture.

  • Helpizz

  • This award follows directly on from last year's Domestix award where the kids were taught & learned some new skills & hopefully they were motivated into going home & practising the skills learned so as to be a blessing to their families at home.

    Aim:
The activities surrounding this module are designed to make the kids more aware of the effort that their parents go to around the home to make their lives comfortable. This award aims to get the kids to participate more in jobs & chores surrounding section care (gardens, lawns etc), food preparation, meal times & other kitchen activities. Rubbish disposal, tidying & other "mundane" things to do around the home.

Interest

  • Hobeez

  • Generally most kids have a fascination with how things work & how they are made. This Award gives the kids a few simple projects to work on which will teach them some new skills & hobbies & they will be able to take home & enjoy the item(s) they have produced in addition the activities may arouse a long term interest in a specific hobby or activity.

    Aim:
The purpose of the Hobeez Award is to introduce kids to wide a range of hobby activities that involve creativity that are fun & rewarding. The aim is to open the kids' eyes to the joy & fun that can be gotten from creating simple electronics, art, craft, model, or other types of construction activities.

  • Worx

  • Modern society places great expectation on aiming for well paying jobs. However, there is little opportunity for kids to view the many different employment options that are open to them. Kids must also confront a conflicting view which promotes a lazy work ethic; languishing on the benefit or in a low paying job without trying to improve their situation.

Aim: The purpose of this award is to give the kids a glimpse into the adult workers world, with the aim of nurturing a good work ethic in the kids & to allow them the opportunity to formulate a picture of what they may wish to do as a career after their school days are over.
